Welcome to Carpentry 701. The program is designed to prepare students to enter the Carpentry vocation. Throughout the program students will develop the practical skills, technical knowledge, and safe work attitudes, required to be successful in industry. emphasis will be placed on the Essential and employable skills required to begin a career in the Carpentry Industry. This is a recommended prerequisite course for all other carpentry technology courses.
Students will be given the opportunity to register as youth apprentices through the ASAP Apprenticeship program and upon successful completion of the program, with a mark of 70%, students may challenge their Block 1 Apprenticeship Exam and receive credit towards their Apprenticeship. A passing grade of 50% is required for high school credit. A passing grade of 70% is required for opportunities recognized by Apprenticeship.
Carpentry 701 This course introduces students to tools, equipment, theories and practices common to the trade with a constant emphasis on safe work habits. During this course students will learn to: identify various species of wood and describe their characteristics; identify, construct and apply various methods of wood joinery; and develop technical skills with various hand and power tools common to the trade. Students will also develop skills in communication through drafting and basic math concepts for trade-related problems.
Carpentry 701A introduces the student to a number of fundamental carpentry skills. A certain proficiency will be required in each skill before advancing to the next skill. The first half of the semester is spent in the classroom and the second half is spent in the lab. There is an entry fee of $25.00 for this course. This fee must be paid by the last week of September.

Drafting exercises and apprentice modules and projects (approx 38) must achieve an 80% score before advancing to the next skill exercise and module.
All of these skill exercises and modules must be completed before mid term exams. Failure to finish will result in a reduction of marks per uncompleted skill. All skills must, also, be completed before student may enter lab portion of the course.

These lab skills are developed by completing a series of construction exercises. Each exercise must achieve an 80% score before advancing to the next skill exercise.
The second portion of lab students are required to complete one large project working from a set of working drawings. These projects must be constructed according to plans.
